Short answer

Modal has a mild natural flexibility, and modal knits such as jersey often feel soft and give easily. Woven modal is much less stretchy. For firm stretch and recovery, modal is usually blended with a small share of spandex or elastane. As with other cellulose fibers, it is more accurate to say the stretch comes largely from the knit than from the fiber.

What modal is

Modal is a type of rayon made from cellulose, commonly from beech wood pulp. It is a more refined relative of viscose and is known for a smooth, soft hand and good drape. It is widely used in underwear, loungewear, t-shirts and bedding, and in headscarves (see types of hijab fabric). For how it compares with other fibers, see is modal similar to cotton. For the closely related fiber, see does viscose stretch.

Knit modal vs. woven modal

  • Knit modal (jersey, rib): gives easily because of the loop structure. Often used in fitted and stretchy garments.
  • Woven modal (sheets, some shirting): drapey, with much less stretch.

Product listings often show modal jersey with a bit of spandex. The elastic fiber provides recovery so the garment keeps its shape. If you want stretch that holds up, look for elastane in the fiber content. Learn more in uses of Lycra fabric, and for cotton-based mixes see is cotton blend material stretchy.

Can modal go in the dryer?

It depends on the product. Modal is often described as more stable and less prone to shrinking than standard viscose, but heat can still cause shrinking or wear, particularly with elastane. Many care labels suggest a gentle wash and low heat or air drying. Follow the label on your specific item.

Disadvantages of modal

  • It is usually more expensive than basic cotton or polyester.
  • It can pill with wear and washing (see fabrics that don’t pill).
  • Knit modal can lose shape over time, and elastane can weaken with heat.
  • It may be less durable than some synthetics.
  • Production uses chemical processing, and environmental impact varies by producer.

Is modal nicer than polyester?

Many people find modal softer and smoother against the skin, and it tends to feel less clammy than some polyester. Polyester usually wins on durability, wrinkle resistance and fast drying. “Nicer” depends on use: modal for everyday comfort, polyester for hard-wearing or sporty use. Our full modal fabric vs polyester comparison covers comfort, durability and care. See does polyester stretch for its stretch behavior.

Is modal as healthy as cotton?

Be cautious with health claims. Both are generally considered comfortable for most people. Cotton is a natural fiber and modal is a manufactured cellulose fiber, but neither is proven to be healthier than the other for the general wearer. If you have skin sensitivities, choose based on how a fabric feels, and check any dyes or finishes.
