Short answer
Lycra is a brand name for spandex, also called elastane, an elastic fiber. It is usually blended in small amounts with other fibers such as cotton, nylon, polyester or wool to add stretch, recovery and a closer fit. It shows up in activewear, swimwear, underwear and shapewear, hosiery, jeans and other stretchy clothing, and in medical compression wear.
What Lycra is
Lycra is the trade name of one producer for spandex fiber. The generic terms are spandex (common in North America) and elastane (common in Europe). The fiber can stretch much further than ordinary textile fibers and then return toward its original length. It is rarely used alone, and it is mixed into fabrics so they can move with the body.
Common uses of Lycra fabric
Activewear and sportswear
Leggings, yoga pants, sports bras, running shorts and compression garments rely on stretch and shape retention. Mixes with nylon or polyester are common. See is nylon stretchy and does polyester stretch for the base fibers.
Swimwear
Swimsuits usually contain elastane so they fit snugly and keep their shape. If you are sewing your own, see best fabric for sewing a swimsuit. Chlorine and heat can wear elastic fibers down over time, so rinsing and gentle care are generally advised.
Underwear, lingerie and shapewear
Bras, briefs and shapewear use elastic fiber for a snug but flexible fit.
Hosiery and socks
Tights, pantyhose and socks use it to cling without slipping down.
Denim and everyday clothing
Stretch jeans, fitted shirts, dresses and trousers often include a few percent of elastane for comfort and so they do not bag out as readily. See is cotton stretchable for how cotton behaves without it.
Medical and specialty uses
Compression stockings and supports, costumes and motion-capture suits also use elastic fibers. For medical products, follow professional guidance and the manufacturer’s instructions.
Why it is blended in small amounts
A little elastic fiber goes a long way. Most garments contain only a few percent, which gives stretch while letting the main fiber supply the look, feel and breathability. More elastane gives more stretch and hold, as in compression and shapewear. See is cotton blend material stretchy for how blends differ, and does modal stretch or does viscose stretch for other fibers it is paired with.
Is Lycra fabric good for winter?
Lycra itself is not a warm fiber, so warmth comes from the other fibers and the fabric’s thickness. Fleece-lined leggings or a wool blend with elastane can be warm, while thin stretch fabric on its own offers little insulation. Layers matter more than elastane content.
Is cotton better than Lycra?
They are not direct competitors, since Lycra is an additive that goes with other fibers. Cotton is breathable and soft, while Lycra adds stretch. Cotton with a bit of Lycra often combines both. A garment that is entirely elastic fiber is uncommon.
Care
Heat can degrade elastic fibers over time. Common advice is to wash in cool or warm water, avoid high dryer heat (see do synthetic fabrics shrink), and skip fabric softener if the label discourages it. Follow the care label.
FAQ
Is Lycra the same as spandex?
Lycra is a brand of spandex. The terms are often used interchangeably.
Does Lycra stretch out?
Elastic fibers can lose recovery with age, heat and wear.
What are the 12 types of fabric?
There is no single official list. Fabrics are often grouped by fiber (cotton, wool, silk, linen, polyester, nylon, rayon and others) or by construction, such as woven and knit.
