Short answer

Yes, ring-spun cotton can shrink, including combed ring-spun cotton. It is still cotton, so heat, moisture and agitation can make it contract. Ring-spun garments are often described as more stable and softer than standard cotton, but “ring-spun” describes how the yarn was made, not whether the garment was pre-shrunk. The label on the specific item matters more than the yarn name.

What “ring-spun” and “combed” mean

Ring spinning is a method of twisting and drawing cotton fibers into yarn. It produces a relatively fine, smooth, strong yarn. Open-end spinning is a faster, generally cheaper alternative that tends to give a coarser yarn.

“Combed” is an extra step before spinning that removes short fibers and straightens the rest. Combed cotton is usually described as smoother and stronger; see combed cotton vs regular cotton for the process. You will often see “combed ring-spun cotton” on better-quality t-shirts.

Is 100% ring-spun cotton the same as 100% cotton?

Both are cotton fiber. “100% cotton” tells you the fiber content. “Ring-spun” tells you how the yarn was spun. A shirt can be 100% cotton and ring-spun, or 100% cotton and open-end. The terms are not opposites, and neither promises a particular amount of shrinkage.

Does ring-spun mean pre-shrunk?

No. Pre-shrinking is a separate finishing treatment. Some ring-spun garments are pre-shrunk and say so on the label or product page, and some are not. If the listing does not mention it, assume some shrinkage is possible, particularly with hot washing and drying.

How much does ring-spun cotton shrink?

There is no single figure. Retailers and guides often suggest that pre-shrunk ring-spun garments lose only a small amount, a few percent at most, while items that were not pre-shrunk can shrink more on the first wash. Knit t-shirts and fleece generally move more than tightly woven fabrics. See our overview of cotton shrinkage in the wash for the general picture.

Does combed ring-spun cotton shrink less?

Often it holds its shape somewhat better because the yarn is tighter and more uniform, which is why many guides say it shrinks less than standard cotton. But this is a tendency, not a guarantee. Fabric construction, finishing and how you wash and dry it can outweigh the yarn type.

Which t-shirts shrink least?

Shirts that are labeled pre-shrunk, shirts blended with polyester (see whether synthetic fabrics shrink), and shirts with a denser fabric tend to change least. Washing cool and drying on low heat matters for all of them.

How to wash and dry ring-spun cotton

  • Check the care label first.
  • Wash in cold or lukewarm water on a gentle or normal cycle.
  • Tumble dry on low, or dry flat or on a line.
  • Remove items from the dryer while slightly damp if you are worried about size.
  • If you want a garment to fit tighter, shrink it gradually, not all at once.

FAQ

Is ring-spun cotton better quality? It is usually softer and smoother than open-end cotton, and often costs more (see ring-spun vs regular cotton). Quality still depends on the whole garment.

Will a pre-shrunk ring-spun shirt shrink at all? It may, slightly, especially with high heat.

Do cotton-polyester blends shrink less? Usually, since polyester resists shrinking, though the cotton portion can still change.
