The short answer

Poly cotton is generally soft and smooth to the touch, but it is usually a little less soft and less “natural” feeling than 100% cotton. How soft it feels depends on the blend ratio, the yarn quality, the weave and how the fabric has been finished and washed.

What polycotton means

Polycotton, also written poly-cotton or poly cotton, is a fabric that blends polyester and cotton fibers. Common ratios are 50/50, 65/35 and 80/20, with the cotton percentage usually listed first, though not always. The blend aims to combine cotton’s comfort with polyester’s strength and easy care.

How polycotton feels

  • Smooth. Polyester fibers can make the surface feel slightly sleeker than pure cotton.
  • Crisp. Many polycotton fabrics, such as sheets and shirting, feel a bit crisper and hold their shape.
  • Less plush. It may lack the fluffy, deep softness that high-quality cotton can have, such as a good brushed or long-staple cotton.

Some people notice no real difference in a well-made blend, while others find polycotton slick or slightly synthetic. It is partly a matter of personal preference.

What changes softness

  • Blend ratio. More cotton generally means a softer, more natural feel. Higher polyester content tends to feel stiffer or more slippery. See cotton vs cotton polyester blend for how ratios compare.
  • Yarn and fiber quality. Fine, smooth yarns usually feel softer than coarse ones.
  • Weave or knit. A jersey knit feels different from a plain-woven percale or a twill.
  • Finishing. Brushing, pre-washing or softening treatments can improve the hand-feel.
  • Age and washing. Cotton-rich fabrics often soften with washing, and polycotton resists wrinkles and keeps its texture over many washes.

Making polycotton feel softer

  • Wash a new item before first use.
  • Avoid very hot water and high dryer heat, which can stiffen fibers and cause shrinkage (see does cotton shrink in the wash).
  • Use a gentle detergent and don’t overload the machine.
  • Choose a lower-polyester ratio when buying.
  • Consider a small amount of fabric softener, although it can reduce absorbency and some manufacturers advise against it, so check the care label.

How to tell what a fabric is made of

  • Read the label. The fiber content is usually listed as percentages.
  • Look at the sheen and drape. A slightly smoother, shinier or more wrinkle-resistant surface may suggest polyester content, though this is not definitive.
  • Check wrinkling. Squeeze the fabric in your hand and release. Pure cotton tends to crease more.
  • Be cautious with burn tests. Fiber burn tests are used by some sewists but involve fire, so only try them safely and on a scrap if at all. The label is a safer guide.

Is polycotton real cotton?

Polycotton contains real cotton, but it is not 100% cotton. It is a blend, so it carries both cotton’s and polyester’s properties. If you want a fabric that is fully natural, look for labels that say 100% cotton.

Polycotton vs cotton: when each wins

  • Polycotton is popular for sheets, uniforms, workwear and everyday clothes that need to resist wrinkles and wash often.
  • Cotton tends to win on breathability, softness and a natural feel, particularly for warm weather and sensitive skin.

FAQ

Is polyester better than cotton?

Neither is better in every way. Polyester is usually stronger, quicker drying and lower-wrinkle, while cotton is typically more breathable and softer.

What does polycotton mean?

It means a fabric made from a blend of polyester and cotton.

Is poly cotton good for bedding?

Many people find it a durable, easy-care option (see polyester vs cotton sheets). If you tend to sleep hot or want the softest feel, you may prefer 100% cotton or a high-cotton blend.
