Short answer

Rayon usually feels soft, smooth and cool to the touch, with a fluid, flowing drape. Many people compare it to a more affordable relative of silk or a very soft cotton. That said, “rayon” covers many different fabrics, so it can range from silky and lightweight to slightly crisp or textured, depending on the type of fiber, the weave and any blend.

What rayon is made of

Rayon is made from cellulose, the structural material in plants. Manufacturers typically start with wood pulp, though other plant sources can be used. The cellulose is dissolved with chemicals, pushed through fine holes to form filaments, and then solidified into fiber that is spun and woven or knitted into cloth. Because it starts as plant material but is chemically processed, rayon is generally described as a regenerated or semi-synthetic fiber. For how it relates to viscose, modal and lyocell, see our guide on whether viscose is breathable.

How rayon feels on skin

  • Smooth. The filaments are fine and the surface is even, which gives many rayon fabrics a slippery, silky handfeel.
  • Cool. Rayon often feels cool when you first touch or put it on, which is part of why it is popular for warm-weather clothing (see our guide to the best shirt fabric for summer).
  • Light and fluid. It tends to drape and move rather than hold a firm shape.
  • Gentle on most skin. Many people find rayon comfortable next to the skin, though individual reactions differ and finishes or dyes can matter.

Is rayon soft or stiff?

Most rayon is on the soft side. Fabrics such as rayon challis, crepe and jersey are typically fluid and soft. Some rayon cloths, such as heavier twills, certain linen-look weaves or finished fabrics, can feel firmer or slightly textured. Stiffness can also come from sizing or finishing applied to new fabric, which often relaxes after washing. If you are comparing it with cotton, the usual difference is that rayon feels silkier and drapier, whereas cotton feels crisper or more structured. Our rayon vs cotton article goes through that comparison.

How feel varies by type and weave

  • Viscose rayon: the most common type, typically soft and drapey.
  • Modal: a rayon-family fiber often described as very soft and smooth, and generally more stable than basic viscose. See modal vs cotton.
  • Lyocell: another cellulose fiber made with a different process, often described as smooth and slightly cool, sometimes with a slightly heavier hand. Our lyocell care guide has more.
  • Weave and knit: a light challis or jersey feels fluid, while a plainer or heavier weave feels more substantial.

How blends change the feel

Rayon is frequently blended. Added cotton tends to give a bit more structure, linen adds texture, silk adds sheen, spandex adds stretch, and polyester adds firmness and wrinkle resistance. The result feels like a mix of the components, and the care needs are usually set by the more delicate fiber. Compared with pure polyester, rayon generally feels softer and less slick, as covered in polyester vs rayon.

How rayon feels after washing

Many rayon fabrics soften with washing, but not always in a good way. Hot washing, rough agitation or tumble drying can make the surface look worn, change the drape, or leave the fabric feeling stiffer or rougher. Gentle washing and air drying generally keep the hand soft for longer.

Does rayon shrink?

It can. Rayon is one of the fabrics that may shrink when washed, especially in warm water or with heat drying, and it is weaker when wet, so it can also stretch out of shape (more in does viscose fabric stretch). Following the care label, washing cool or by hand and drying flat or on a hanger is the lower-risk approach. Some garments are labeled for dry cleaning only, and it is wise to respect that.

Tips for judging rayon in a store

  • Rub the fabric between your fingers: a smooth, cool, fluid feel is typical.
  • Scrunch a corner and release it; heavy wrinkling suggests it will need ironing, and our guide to ironing viscose fabric explains how.
  • Hold it up to the light to judge how open or dense it is.
  • Read the full fiber content and the care label, because the blend affects both feel and washing.
