The short answer
Egyptian cotton sheets are generally more breathable, and a good set can feel luxurious and last for years. Microfiber sheets are generally cheaper, soft from the first wash, quick to dry and resistant to wrinkles, but they tend to hold more heat. If you sleep hot or want a long-lasting set, Egyptian cotton is usually the better fit; if budget and easy care matter most, microfiber is a practical option.
What is microfiber made of?
Microfiber is a category of very fine synthetic fibres, most commonly polyester, sometimes blended with nylon. The fibres are thinner than most natural fibres, which lets manufacturers weave or knit a dense, smooth, soft fabric that is often brushed for extra softness. Because it is polyester-based, many of the points in our polyester vs cotton sheets comparison apply here too.
What is Egyptian cotton?
Egyptian cotton is cotton grown in Egypt, typically from extra-long staple (ELS) varieties. Longer fibres can be spun into smoother, stronger yarn, which is why the fibre has a premium reputation. It is a fibre rather than a weave, so Egyptian cotton can be woven as crisp percale or smooth sateen. Our Egyptian cotton vs sateen article explains the difference.
Comparison
| Microfiber | Egyptian cotton | |
|---|---|---|
| Fibre | Fine synthetic (usually polyester) | Natural, extra-long staple cotton |
| Breathability | Lower; can trap heat | Generally good |
| Feel | Smooth, soft quickly | Soft, often improves with washing |
| Wrinkles | Resists wrinkles | Wrinkles more |
| Drying | Fast | Slower |
| Pilling | Can pill or hold static | Lower risk with quality yarn |
| Price | Low | Mid to high |
Temperature, feel, durability, care and cost
- Temperature: cotton absorbs moisture and allows air through, so it usually sleeps cooler. Microfiber absorbs very little water, so some people feel warm or clammy.
- Feel: microfiber is soft immediately. Egyptian cotton may feel crisper at first, then softer with washing.
- Durability: a quality ELS cotton set can last a long time. Microfiber is strong, but cheaper sets can pill or lose softness.
- Care: microfiber is easy to wash and dries quickly. Egyptian cotton usually needs more attention to avoid shrinkage and wrinkling. Avoid very high heat for both, and skip fabric softener on microfiber, which can reduce its feel.
- Cost: microfiber is among the cheapest options. Egyptian cotton sets are priced higher, and price reflects both fibre and construction.
Do hotels use cotton or microfiber?
Practices vary. Many hotels use cotton or cotton-polyester blends, often in percale, because they handle frequent commercial laundering. Some budget properties use microfiber. Luxury hotels often advertise cotton, sometimes Egyptian cotton, but a hotel being a particular brand does not mean its sheets are Egyptian cotton. If you want to replicate the hotel look, see our guide to the best thread count for Egyptian cotton.
Bamboo vs microfiber
Bamboo sheets are typically made from bamboo-derived viscose or lyocell, which are manufactured cellulose fibres (see whether viscose is breathable for how that type of fibre handles heat). They are often described as soft and cool, but the quality varies by product. Compared with microfiber, bamboo-derived fabrics usually absorb moisture better and feel cooler, while microfiber is usually cheaper and more wrinkle-resistant. Neither is automatically the healthier option.
A caution on labelling
“Egyptian cotton” is sometimes used loosely in marketing. A high thread count, a low price and a vague label are reasons to look more closely. Look for clear fibre content, and certifications or authenticity programmes where offered, rather than relying on the phrase alone.
Which should you choose?
- Choose microfiber for a tight budget, kids’ beds, guest rooms or low-maintenance bedding.
- Choose Egyptian cotton if you sleep hot or want a long-lasting upgrade.
- If you are not sure about either, compare silk vs cotton sheets for a different luxury route.
- There is no single healthiest sheet; breathable, washable fabrics laundered regularly are a sensible default.
